Welcome to
Lumpkin Literacy

Did you know that Lumpkin Literacy bought over 7,000 of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library books for preschoolers in Lumpkin County last year? Or that we provided GED scholarships that have helped make Lumpkin the #1 for GED graduates per capita in the State of Georgia?

We're so grateful to our donors who make these programs and many more possible for our residents.

After dedicating an illustrious 47-year career to elementary education in South Florida, Barbara Gail Adams embarked upon a well-deserved retirement in the serene environs of Dahlonega's mountains. Her transition to this phase of life led her to assume the role of a distinguished board member at Lumpkin Literacy. During her tenure, she became acutely aware of the pressing imperative to provide educational support to detainees striving to attain their General Education Development (GED) qualifications at the Lumpkin County Detention Center.

Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to this cause, Barbara invested a span of three years in ardently guiding and instructing motivated detainees towards the attainment of their GEDs, leveraging the Adult Education program offered by Lanier Technical College. Regrettably, the outbreak of the global Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 necessitated the suspension of her instructive endeavors. Tragically, Barbara's untimely demise in 2021 occurred prior to the resumption of her teaching efforts. However, her parting wish was resolute — she fervently desired the continuity of the crucial work being conducted at the Center.

In remembrance of Barbara's indelible contributions, a scholarship has been established in her honor by her friends and family. This scholarship is expressly designed to extend support to detainees who aspire to obtain their GEDs and subsequently pursue higher education. Already, this initiative has facilitated the educational journeys of two detainees, enabling them to secure their high school equivalency. The scholarship stands as an inclusive opportunity, available to both former and present detainees of Lumpkin County. Its scope encompasses financial aid to defray expenses related to GED testing fees, essential course materials, vocational training, and requisite tools for occupational pursuits.

We invite you to join us in preserving Barbara Gail Adams' legacy by contributing to the Barbara Gail Adams Memorial Scholarship. Your benevolent donation will serve as an inspiration, fostering the continuation of detainees' educational aspirations. Through your generosity, Barbara's enduring dedication to the ideals of teaching, learning, and philanthropy will perpetuate.
